How To Make Layered Mint Chocolate Fudge

Our Layered Mint Chocolate Fudge recipe is quick and easy to prepare simply by melting chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk in the microwave and pouring the chocolate mixture into a pan.

Chocolate Mint Fudge ingredients

Chocolate Mint Fudge Ingredients

  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Sweetened condensed milk
  • Vanilla extract
  • Mint chocolate chips: I used Guittard brand but feel free to use your favorite.
  • Green gel food coloring (optional)
  • Gold confetti sprinkles
  • Gold sanding sugar

Substitutions and Additions

  • Choose Your Chocolate Chips: Substitute milk chocolate chips for the semi-sweet chips. If you can’t find mint chocolate chips, use white chocolate chips and add 1 teaspoon of mint extract and a few drops of green food coloring.
  • Make It More Minty: You can add a few drops of peppermint extract to the chocolate mixture to make your fudge even more minty. Or top your treat with some chopped Andes mints, mint cookie pieces, or crushed peppermint candy.

How to Make Chocolate Mint Fudge

  1. Make The Chocolate Mixture: Melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk in the microwave for 1 minute, stir, and continue microwaving in 10 second intervals until completely melted (mixture will be thick). Stir in the vanilla.
  2. Pour In The Pan: Pour the chocolate fudge into the pan and spread evenly.
Pro Tip: Use a pressing motion with the back of a metal spoon if it’s too thick to spread.
  3. Make The Mint Mixture: Melt the mint chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk in the microwave for 1 minute, stir, and continue microwaving in 10 second intervals until completely melted.
Pro Tip: If you’d like the green from the mint chocolate chips to be a little darker, you can add a few drops of green food coloring.
  4. Layer: Pour the mint mixture over the chocolate layer, spread evenly, and decorate with gold confetti sprinkles and sanding sugar.
  5. Chill: Refrigerate for 1-2 hours or until set.
  6. Slice and Serve: Cut into 16 squares and serve.

Tips For Making The Best Chocolate Mint Fudge

  • If you’d like the fudge to be a little bit thinner, a 9×9-inch pan can be used instead.
  • Spread the chocolate fudge and mint mixtures while still warm. The cooler the mixtures get, the more difficult they will be to spread.
  • Heat just until the chocolate is melted, do not overheat.
  • Don’t refrigerate for longer than about 2 hours, otherwise it will be difficult to cut through.
  • Be sure to use sweetened condensed milk, not evaporated milk. The fudge will not set if evaporated milk is used.

How to Store Chocolate Mint Fudge

  • To Store: Store your fudge in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. It can also be left out at room temperature for up to 1 week, which is recommended. Refrigerating the fudge can make it last longer, but can also dry it out.
  • To Freeze: You can freeze the butterscotch fudge for up to 3 months. Allow the fudge to thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I swirl the mixtures instead of layering?

If desired, the chocolate and mint mixtures can try to be swirled together, but this would need to be done before the chocolate begins to set. I recommended layering instead because it’s much easier to accomplish.

Can I use evaporated milk instead of sweetened condensed milk for my fudge?

No, you can’t substitute evaporated milk for sweetened condensed milk in this fudge recipe. Sweetened condensed milk is evaporated milk with sugar added to it. Because of its thicker consistency and additional sugar, sweetened condensed milk is necessary for this mint chocolate fudge recipe.

What is the best way to cut through the fudge?

To cut your fudge, it’s best to use a large chef’s knife. You can warm the knife by running it under warm water, then drying it off with a towel before slicing.

How do I freeze fudge?

Wrap the fudge in waxed paper first, then wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Place the wrapped fudge in a gallon-size ziplock bag and place it in the freezer for up to 3 months.
