Candy Corn Jello Shots ingredients

Ingredients

  • Knox unflavored gelatin
  • Orange Gelatin: I used orange-flavored Jell-O for this recipe.
  • Yellow Gelatin: I used lemon-flavored Jell-O for this recipe.
  • Vodka
  • Water
  • Simple syrup
  • Whipped cream
  • Almond extract

Substitutions and Additions

  • Use Other Alcohol: I think the neutral taste of vodka works well with the different flavors of jello in this recipe, however feel free to use your favorite spirits. Halloween shots can be made with vodka, rum, whiskey, tequila, or whatever alcohol you prefer!
  • Add Other Flavors: You can skip the almond extract in the white layer if preferred. It just gives it more of a candy corn flavor to match the theme. You can even add other fruity flavorings in its place to pair with the other two layers.
  • Grab Your Garnish: Garnish your shots with candy corn and whipped cream. You can even add some sprinkles or sanding sugar.

How to Make Candy Corn Jello Shots

  1. Prepare The White Layer: Pour the unflavored gelatin over the vodka and mix until the powder is wet. Let the gelatin bloom for 3-5 minutes and then pour the boiling water over the top and mix until fully dissolved. Add the simple syrup, stir, and whisk in the whipped cream.
Pro Tip: Try to not whisk hard as you don’t want to become too foamy.
  2. Set In A Shot Cup: Fill each shot cup about a third full with the white mixture and chill in the fridge for about an hour until set.
  3. Prepare The Orange Layer: Dissolve the orange jello with boiling water and then mix in the vodka and cold water. Whisk in the whipped cream and let the jello cool for 15 minutes.
  4. Set In A Shot Cup: Fill each shot cup another third full with the orange jello mixture and chill in the fridge for an hour until set.
  5. Prepare The Yellow Layer: Dissolve the yellow jello with boiling water and then mix in the vodka and cold water. Whisk in the whipped cream and let the jello cool for 15 minutes.
  6. Set In A Shot Cup: Fill each shot cup the final third full with the yellow jello mixture and chill in the fridge for an hour until set.
  7. Serve: Top with a dollop of whipped cream and some candy corn, serve, and enjoy!

Tip From Our Recipe Developer

  • I use a basic Wilton 1M frosting tip and disposable frosting bag to put the dollop of whipped cream on top of the shots. You can find it or a similar tip at most grocery stores such as Walmart.
  • Do not garnish the shots if you’re not serving them right away. If you garnish them and then stick them in the fridge, the whipped cream gets stiff and the candy gets sticky and chewy. It’s gross! They’re quick and easy to garnish, so fancy them up right before serving.
  • If using glass shot glasses, you may want to provide mini spoons for serving your guests. You won’t be able to loosen the sides of the shot like you might in a typical plastic shot cup.

Storage

  • To Store: You can store your jello shots, uncovered, in the fridge for up to 2 days or covered for up to 5 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make jello shots in advance?

Yes, these jello shots can be made ahead and should last for at least two days, uncovered in the fridge. However, if they’re covered well, they will last about 5 days. Do not freeze them.

Can I make my shots in smaller shot glasses?

Yes, you can use smaller shot glasses or cups to make your shots. You will get more shots out of this mixture so make sure you have more than 20 cups. Each color just gets a third of the glass you use. It’s a pretty easy transition.

Why do my shots have white lines between the layers?

You may end up with really light white lines in between each layer due to the whipped cream settling in each layer. There’s really no way around this unless you skip the whipped cream, but the whipped cream helps define each layer, especially since they give a see-through color without the whipped cream and the orange taints both the white and yellow.
