Old Fashioned Cream Cheese Mint Recipe
Our Old-fashioned Cream Cheese Mints recipe is easy to make simply by beating together cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and mint flavor to form a white dough.
Color with food coloring so they’re pretty in pastels, like my cream cheese Butter Mints, look classic like my Christmas Mints, or keep them white; press them into molds, prepare them like pillows, or flatten them with a fork.
Often called wedding mints or baby shower mints, these homemade cream cheese mints taste buttery and subtly sweet with a rich, smooth, and creamy texture that will dissolve on your tongue.
These mint candies are firm on the outside and soft on the inside – they’ll melt in your mouth like mint-flavored cream cheese frosting and may freshen your breath after a meal as a bonus!
Why We Love Cream Cheese Mint Candy Recipes
- Quick and easy to prepare (the mint-flavored middle makes it well worth the wait for them to dry).
- It only uses 4 ingredients plus gel food coloring.
- The undyed dough is a blank canvas to customize with different colors according to the holiday.
- It is softer and creamier than the name-brand butter mint candy.
- Package portions in parchment-lined tins to give as gifts.
- Perfect for bridal and baby showers, weddings, parties, or eating after dinner.
Cream Cheese Mints Ingredients
- Cream cheese: Full-fat cream cheese works best for this recipe. Use the kind that comes in a block and not the spreadable tub.
- Butter
- Powdered sugar or confectioner’s sugar
- Mint extract: Use pure mint or pure peppermint extract.
- Neon green, neon pink, and classic blue gel food coloring
Substitutions and Additions
- Use Other Extracts: You can use other extract flavors if mint isn’t your favorite. Try cherry, cinnamon, or strawberry flavoring for red mints; vanilla or coconut for white mints; lemon for yellow mints; and lime for green mints.
- Customize Your Candy: These cream mints can be colored to match a party theme or other holiday celebration. Use pastel colors for Easter, Mother’s Day, and baby or bridal showers; use red and green for Christmas; make them multi-colored for birthdays; use gold, silver and white for weddings and anniversary parties; or use orange for Halloween.
- Decorate Or Dip: Feel free to add sprinkles to the dough for an extra festive flair. You can also roll the dough in granulated sugar or crushed candy canes or even dip your candies in melting chocolate to create a homemade Peppermint Patty.
How to Make Cream Cheese Mints
- Make The Dough Mixture: Beat together the cream cheese, butter, mint, and powdered sugar for 3-4 minutes. Continue mixing by hand, kneading the mixture and forming a ball.
- Divide The Dough: Cut the dough ball into 4 equal parts and place each into a separate mixing bowl.
- Color: Fold in a different food coloring to each bowl, except for one which will remain white, and mix until fully blended.
- Flatten With A Fork: Form the dough into 1 teaspoon sized balls, place them on a baking sheet, and flatten about half way down with a fork.
Pro Tip: Place the fork in the remaining powdered sugar before pressing into the ball. - Sit And Serve: Allow mints to sit at room temperature for 4-6 hours before serving. Enjoy!
Tips For Making Cream Cheese Mints
- You will need to purchase both a neon food coloring packet and a traditional food coloring packet to create the coloring for these mints.
- The mixture will be crumbly at first when mixing. Blend using an electric hand mixer for 3-4 minutes until the mixture stops changing. Then mix it with your hands.
- This works best when butter and cream cheese are truly softened.
- The mixture should have a playdough feel after you’ve mixed it with your hands.
- You may want to mix by hand to work the color into the mints.
- Wash your hands between kneading the different color mixtures.
How to Store Cream Cheese Mints
- To Store: These cream cheese mints can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
- To Freeze: Freeze cream cheese mints in airtight containers or freezer bags for a few months. You may want some parchment paper between layers. Thaw in the fridge before serving.

Donโt know yet
Just wondering how many mints 1 batch makes? Going to make this for my friends baby shower.
These came out great. I used my food processor instead of a mixer and it came together perfectly!
I’m sorry I don’t understand how much cream cheese is actually needed for this recipe.
Hi Stephanie, I just edited the post to make it more clear. Sorry about that! You will use 4 ounces of cream cheese, but can add an extra tablespoon if needed. See the notes section.
Love these mints. I make for many holidays. Thank you for all the great cookies and desserts๐
