Better Than Carnival Fried Oreos

Thank goodness for Charlie Boghosian, also known as “The Man Who Fries Everything,” who introduced Deep-Fried Oreos at the L.A. County Fair in 2001. State fairs would not be the same without this decadent fried treat.

Now, we wanted to make sure that we made Charlie proud with our deep frying skills, so we embarked on a delicious journey of trial and error, meticulously testing and tweaking every step (it was a tough job, but someone needed to do it.)

The result? A recipe that delivers crispy, golden exteriors with a warm, melty Oreo center in every single bite. We’re confident we’ve cracked the code on Deep-Fried Oreo perfection, and you won’t be disappointed!

Ingredients Notes

  • Vegetable oil: Opt for a neutral cooking oil with a high smoke point for frying. I use vegetable oil, but canola oil or avocado oil are great alternatives.
  • Double Stuf Oreos: Using Double Stuffed Oreos is best because they are creamier than regular Oreo cookies. However, there is so much room for fun with this recipe when you use your favorite flavors. Some of my favorites include Birthday Cake Oreos, Peanut Butter Oreos, Golden Oreos, and Mint Oreos to name a few.
  • Bisquick: I always use Bisquick because I find that it tends to make the best fried Oreo batter. However, you can use just about any pancake mix you prefer.
  • Egg
  • Milk: I think whole milk tastes best, but lowfat milk will also work.
  • Vanilla extract
  • Powdered Sugar: Used for dusting the desserts with an extra layer of sweetness.

How to Make Deep-Fried Oreos

  1. Heat: Heat oil in a large dutch oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Prepare The Pancake Batter: Whisk together the egg, vanilla extract, and milk. Add the pancake mix and whisk until no lumps remain.
  3. Coat The Cookies: Submerge the Oreo in the batter and scoop it up with an extra spoonful of batter. Lower it into the oil so that the Oreo is on the bottom and the extra batter is on top.
  4. Cook: Cook in batches, 2-3 cookies at a time, for 30-60 seconds or until golden brown.
  5. Sprinkle and Serve: Place on paper towels and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve immediately while the creme filling is still hot! Enjoy!

How To Air Fry Fried Oreos

For a slightly healthier fried Oreo snack, you can cook your Oreos in the air fryer. Simply follow the instructions above, or see our recipe specifically for air-fried Oreos. When it comes time to put the Oreos in the oil, you will place them in the air fryer basket instead.

Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees. Put your battered Oreos into an air fryer basket lined with parchment paper. Then, cook the Oreos for 4-5 minutes on one side. Flip them, and cook for another 2-3 minutes, until they are golden brown.

The texture and final product is a bit different than if you fry them using oil. I prefer to use oil, but an air fryer can be another quick and easy method for making your fried Oreos!

Serving Suggestions

There is no need to wait for the state fair to get your fix of fried snacks and sweet treats. Make your own carnival magic at home and serve them while they’re hot and fresh so they don’t turn soggy if they sit for too long.

  • Serve On The Side: Serve your fried Oreos with a side of chocolate or caramel sauce for dipping, a scoop of ice cream, or a dollop of whipped cream. You can even spread some magic shell on top. Now you’ve made a delicious dessert made even more decadent!
  • Serve With A Sip: Cookies and milk make the perfect pair, although a cup of hot coffee or tea will also complement the cookies.

Tips & Variations

  • Test the Temperature of your oil. If it is too hot, your Oreos will burn!
  • Don’t Heat Until Too Hot: Many fried Oreo recipes require you to heat your oil to 375 degrees. I highly recommend only going to 350 degrees. If you heat to 375, it will be too hot, and the Oreos will cook in about 20 seconds per side and almost burn. Twenty seconds is not enough time for the creme filling to get melty!
  • Submerge With A Spoon: You might find instructions online instructing you to insert a fork into the center of the creme filling when covering the cookie in the batter. When trying this technique, I found that the Oreos broke really easily! It’s better to follow the instructions provided above and use a spoon method instead!
  • Pick Out Any Pieces of Bisquick batter that have fallen off into the oil. They will burn and make the deep-fried Oreos taste burnt.

Proper Storage

  • To Store: These fried Oreos are best eaten the day they’re made. However, if you have leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
  • To Reheat: Reheat in the oven or in an air fryer until heated through.

  • 1 quart Vegetable Oil for Frying
  • 1 package Double Stuffed Oreos or one of the other options listed below!
  • cups Bisquick
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Powdered Sugar for dusting

Instructions

    1 quart Vegetable Oil for Frying
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the beaten egg, vanilla extract, and milk. Add the pancake mix and whisk until no lumps remain.
    1 large egg, 1 cup whole milk, ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, 1½ cups Bisquick
  • Next, you’ll be ready to dip your oreos! To do this, place one oreo on a large spoon. Then, dip the oreo into the batter and turn over. Then, scoop up the Oreo and a spoonful of pancake batter. *Make sure that the tops and sides of the Oreo are all covered equally and look pretty! It will affect how they look once they’ve been fried.*
    1 package Double Stuffed Oreos
  • Slowly put the Bisquick covered Oreo into the oil. As you are lowering the spoon into the oil, turn it over so that the oreo is on the bottom and the extra batter ends up on the top.
  • Then, let the Oreo cook for about 30-60 seconds (depending how hot your oil is), or until the Oreo has turned golden brown.
  • Cook the Oreos in batches of 2-3 at a time, and keep an eye on your oil temperature.
  • Remove the Deep Fried Oreos to a paper lined plate. Then, sprinkle them with powdered sugar and serve immediately while the creme filling is still hot!

IMPORTANT TIPS
  1. Many other recipes you will find out there will call for you to heat your oil up to 375 degrees. We really recommend only going to 350 degrees. If you heat to 375 it’s too hot and the Oreos cook in about 20 seconds per side and almost burn. 20 seconds is not enough time to let the creme filling get melty!
  2. You might find instructions out there telling you to insert a fork into the center of the creme filling to cover it in batter and put it into the oil. When trying this technique, we found that the Oreos broke really easily! It’s better to follow the instructions we’ve provided above, that use a spoon method instead!
  3. As you are frying up your Oreos, be sure to pick out any pieces of Bisquick batter that have fallen off into the oil. They will burn and make the deep fried Oreos taste burnt.
