Orange Creamsicle Dirty Soda

This homemade dirty soda recipe, made popular by TikTok and Olivia Rodrigo, is the easiest way to elevate a can of orange soda to a creamy dreamsicle drink. Simply pour the soft drink into a glass filled with ice cubes, add vanilla creamer, and watch it foam!

This 2-ingredient recipe calls for soda instead of orange juice not only because I think it tastes better and more like the original ice cream on a stick, but also there’s no need to add a specialty orange syrup to sweeten the mix.

Why buy a bottle of orange cream soda that boasts it’s the best, when you can make your own refreshing rendition of a Swig dirty soda at home.

Why We Love This Dirty Soda Recipe

  • Quick and easy to make in minutes.
  • Only uses 2 naturally gluten-free ingredients plus plenty of ice.
  • Perfect proportions of orange and cream flavors.
  • Similar to classic Italian cream sodas but made without specialty syrups.
  • Make an orange creamsicle cocktail by spiking your sip.
  • Delicious summer drink that tastes like an orange dreamsicle.

What is a Dirty Soda

A dirty soda is a drink that originated from a Utah chain called Swig. It is a fountain drink combined with flavored syrups and cream served over nugget ice.

The original Dirty Soda is called “The Founder” and is made from Diet Coke, sugar-free coconut, fresh lime and coconut cream.

According to the founder of Swig, anytime you mix anything into soda, it becomes a dirty soda!

It kind of reminds me of Laverne and Shirley! Laverne’s favorite drink was Milk and Pepsi – which always sounded awful to me, but now is weirdly compelling!

Ingredients

  • Orange Soda: I used Sunkist brand but you can use Fanta or your other favorite soda brand.
  • Vanilla-flavored coffee creamer
  • Ice

Substitutions and Additions

  • Swap The Soda: You can swap the orange soda for any type of carbonated beverage like Coke, Diet Coke, Dr. Pepper or Mountain Dew or any other favorite pop or soda!
  • Go Sparkling: You can also choose any type of carbonated water (like seltzer or club soda) or sparkling mineral water in this drink, but you will need to add orange juice and simple syrup to create the sweet orange flavor.
  • Pick Your Flavor: Feel free to try any flavor coffee creamer, half and half, fruit juice or other mix-ins! Get creative to make your own special combination!
  • Grab A Garnish: You can garnish your glass with a fresh orange slice and a straw for a festive and fancy feel.
  • Create The Cream: Feel free to use vanilla ice cream instead of coffee creamer to make more of an ice cream float.
  • Spike Your Sip: To make this a creamsicle cocktail for adults only, add a shot of vanilla vodka or whipped cream vodka to the orange soda. You can also try an orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier or Triple Sec.

Tip From Our Recipe Developer

  • You can cut the calories by using a diet orange soda.
  • Make sure you gently pour the coffee creamer directly onto the ice to allow it to sit on top of the orange soda and create an ombre effect.

  • To Store: This drink is best served immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I freeze my swig creamsicle drink?

No, you cannot freeze this creamsicle drink. Soda is mostly water, which freezes at 32°F and will expand as it freezes. Not only will the fizz disappear and ruin the taste n of this beverage, but the expanding water can cause your glass to break.

Can I make a Dirty Soda in advance?

I do not recommend making this drink ahead of time. Because this recipe calls for orange soda instead of orange juice, the soda will go flat the longer it sits. It’s best to enjoy it immediately.

Can I make my Dirty Soda with sparkling water?

I prefer to make my Swig drink using a sweetened orange soda, like Sunkist or Fanta to limit the number of ingredients in the recipe. If you choose to use sparkling water, like La Croix or San Pellegrino, you will need to include a simple syrup to sweeten the drink.
