Mod Podge DIY Light Switch Cover

Most light switch covers are plain and simply boring. This DIY Light Switch Cover is a great Mod Podge craft and the perfect way to add some personality and a pop of color to any room. Quick and easy to make, kids will have fun decorating these light switch covers and turning them into something special for their bedroom or playroom.

How do you make a DIY Light Switch Cover?

All you need for this project is a light switch cover, the box from your favorite Post Pebbles cereal, washi tape, foam brush, scissors, ruler, piece of white paper and Mod Podge.

What is Mod Podge?

Mod Podge has been around for ages and is a crafting staple. It is an all-in-one glue, sealer and finish used to attach paper and fabric to various surfaces. We love Mod Podge crafts! There are so many great craft projects using Mod Podge, but this is one of our favorites!

To get started, you are going to create a knockout template of the light switch plate onto a piece of paper. If you are a visual person, this helps find the best area to use for the light switch plate. But it’s completely optional; don’t hesitate to just eye-ball it!

Simply trace the switch cover on a piece of paper and cut out the shape.

Once you find the perfect spot, trace the outside of the switch plate onto the cereal box and cut along the lines.

Because the cardboard of the cereal box is a little bit thicker than card stock, you are going to cover only the flat front of the light switch cover. Washi tape will go around the boarder to help seal the edges and add a fun contrasting color to the cereal box.

Trim 1/8 to 1/4-inch off all four side of the cut out. This will ensure the cereal box only covers the flat area of the light switch cover.

Brush Mod Podge on the backside of the cereal box.

Place the cardboard on the center of the light switch cover.

Then add the Washi tape around all four side of the light switch cover making sure that the tape overlaps onto the cereal box and wraps around to the underside of the cover.

Apply two coats of Mod Podge to the surface of the light switch cover. This will seal the cardboard and tape and make the light switch cover easy to clean with a damp cloth. Allow to dry completely.

The final step is to cut out the small opening in the center of the switch cover and then poke the exacto knife through the screw holes.

Screw the light switch cover to the wall and WALLAH!! The perfect pop of color and fun added to any room!
