Looking to make your own hand sanitizer? Our DIY hand sanitizer is easy to make and takes 3 simple ingredients and 5 minutes!
DIY Hand Sanitizer
Hand sanitizer is running low or almost impossible to find, but not to worry, we have a homemade hand sanitizer recipe that is easy to make and only takes a few simple items.
Of course, hand washing is still the best way to make sure your hands are clean, but we like to use this as well and have it for when we are on the go.

Ingredients
- 2/3 cup 99% rubbing alcohol or isopropyl
- 1/3 cup aloe vera gel
- 8-10 drop essential oil (optional)
How to Make Your Own Hand Sanitizer
- Mix all ingredients in a bowl and stir.
- Use a funnel to pour the liquid in an empty bottle or old pump soap bottle
If you want to make a larger batch of hand sanitizer, you are basically using two parts isopropyl alcohol or ethanol (91 percent to 99 percent alcohol) and one part aloe vera.

I like to add a few drops of essential oils in there to make it smell a little better. Some of the essential oils I like are:
- Lavender
- Eucalyptus
- Peppermint
- Lemon
- Grapefruit
When making your own hand sanitizer you will want to keep a few things in mind.
- Before starting, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly.
- Make sure you wipe down the counters and are using a clean bowl and spoon for mixing up the solution.
- Do not dilute the alcohol that you are using. You will need it at full strength otherwise it will not be effective.
How to Properly Use Hand Sanitizer
- Spray or squeeze the sanitizer into the palm of one of your hands
- Rub your hands together and make you saturate and reach the entire surface of your hands, fingers and in between your fingers
- Rub for 30-60 seconds. You want to rub them together until your hands are dry.
As I mentioned, hand washing is the best method for cleaning your hands, but hand sanitizer is a good next option (or in addition to). Hand sanitizer and washing your hands can be very drying on the skin, so be sure to use a moisturizer often to prevent dry and cracked skin.
