You can’t beat the flavor combination that comes from peppermint and chocolate together. These Peppermint Patty cookies are the perfect testament to that. They are the ultimate soft and gooey cookie made with a rich chocolate cake mix, that’s perfectly offset by a cool peppermint center.
Chocolate Peppermint Patty Cookies
These Peppermint Patty cookies are a staple with my holiday baking. With just five ingredients needed, they are one of the easiest cookies that I make during this season. But, they definitely don’t fall short when it comes to their deliciousness.
The use of cake mix and cream cheese makes a soft and gooey cookie. Just looking at these, you’d never know that they are filled with a creamy peppermint patty! These are not only a hit when it comes to holiday sweets, but they also make for a great homemade gift to give.
P.S. I have to thank my friend Amy for the recipe inspiration!

Variations & Add-ins
- CAKE MIX: You can switch things up and use whatever cake mix you like. If you want richer, chocolatey cookies you could use devil’s food cake. You could also use triple chocolate. Swiss Miss even makes a hot chocolate flavored cake mix, which would be fabulous for this recipe!
- CREAM CHEESE & BUTTER: These should both be brought to room temperature so that they are nice and soft and mix into your cookie dough easily.
- SPRINKLES: A fun and easy way to make these cookies a bit more festive is to sprinkle them with red and green sanding sugar, or holiday shaped sprinkles.

How to Make Peppermint Patty Cookies
There are really only three major steps to constructing these cookies, once you’ve mixed the batter! You simply repeat those 3 steps until you’ve used all your cookie dough, then bake. It’s so simple.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Mix together cake mix, cream cheese, butter, and egg.
- Roll dough into 1 ½ tbsp sized balls.
- Flatten one ball in your hand.
- Place one peppermint patty on top.
- Fold the dough around the patty, covering it completely.
- Repeat with the remaining dough balls.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes.
- Cool slightly before serving.
An Easy Christmas Cookie Recipe
We love making them for Christmas Cookie Exchanges! Just spread some icing on top of the cookies and we love to crush some peppermint and sprinkle it on top!
Tips
- I used a cookie scoop to help with shaping the dough balls for my cookies. You want to end up with about 20 cookie balls. The scoop helps keep them all even in size.
- It’s important to make sure that the peppermint pattie is completely covered up by the dough when you are assembling the cookies! You don’t want the patty to leak out and make a mess all over the pan in the oven.
How to Store Peppermint Patty Cookies
A common question is whether or not these cookies need to be stored in the fridge. They do not. They can simply be stored in an airtight container on the countertop. However, you can place them in the fridge as well. I actually prefer them chilled a bit. It really makes the peppermint flavor pop!

Delcious! Will make again!
The picture shows a frosting on these cookies… I see the crushed peppermint candies, but what frosting do you recommend for topping these?
Really, just your favorite frosting! I used a canned frosting just to save time!
Sorry, I’m a “jump to recipe” gal. I see you put a link in your blog post to the icing. Will try these soon!
