Pizza muffins are a super fun new way to make everyone’s favorite food… pizza! That’s right these cute little muffins aren’t your typical bakery item. Instead, they are loaded with cheese, sauce, and pizza toppings.
They are kid-approved and so delicious! (They also make a great appetizer or tailgating recipe!)
Easy Pizza Muffins – A quick & easy lunch or appetizer
My kids love it when I make a recipe for the first time that offers a new and exciting way to make one of their favorite foods. Pizza, of course, is the favorite of all favorites. And I can’t even argue with them, because I love pizza, too! Who doesn’t?
These pizza muffins are a super easy recipe and they are a great recipe to make with kids. We always have a great time making them together and getting creative with the toppings we will use.
Next time you are looking for a fun and delicious recipe to make at home with the kiddos, you have got to give these a try. You will love them as much as they do! Pizza muffins are an easy to make, tasty, unique version of traditional pizza.
Ingredients
Here are the ingredients I traditionally use, however this meal can be super versatile! You can pretty much swap things out and use any toppings you’d traditionally have on a regular pizza. Read the section below for some fun ideas!
- 2 cups flour
- 2 Tsp garlic salt
- 2 Tsp onion powder
- 1 Tsp oregano
- 2 Tsp baking powder
- 1/4 cup grated parmesan
- 2 cups whole milk
- 2 large eggs
- 2 Tbsp salted butter melted
- 1 package mini pepperoni divided
- 1 cup shredded cheddar
- 4 Tbsp pizza sauce
Additions & Substitutions
Protein: While this recipe calls for pepperoni, you could use bacon, ham, or chicken. You could use any combination of these too. Get creative! You can also make your pizza muffins vegetarian and leave out the protein all together!
Pizza Toppings: If you plan to make your pizza muffins vegetarian, I would recommend beefing them up by adding in vegetables or other common pizza toppings. Some options would be green or black olives, green peppers, mushrooms, or onions. You can also add some of these toppings in with your protein. Again, get creative and have fun with it!
Cheese: Traditionally, pizza has mozzarella cheese on it. However, for these pizza muffins you can use any type of shredded cheese. If you like spicy, try doing pepperjack! You could also use provolone, swiss, or cheddar.
How to Make Pizza Muffins
- Chop about 3/4 of the package of mini pepperoni into small pieces and set aside.
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, garlic salt, onion powder, oregano, baking powder, and grated Parmesan cheese.
- Add the milk, egg, melted butter, and half the package of chopped pepperoni to the batter and stir to combine. Note that the batter will be runny!
- Fill the muffin pan ¼ of the way full with the batter, then sprinkle in 1 tablespoon of shredded cheddar cheese in the middle.
- Add more batter on top of the cheese, filling it only about ¾ of the way full.
- Add a dollop of pizza sauce on the top, sprinkle with more cheddar, and add mini pepperoni or other toppings.
- Press ingredients slightly down into the batter. When baking, the muffins will form into a dome, so you want to be careful to not overfill or you’ll have a mess on your hands.
- Bake at 375° for 20-22 minutes, depending on how hot your oven runs.
- Let the muffins rest in the muffin tin for 5 minutes before removing.
How to Make Ahead & Freeze
One of the best things about this recipe is that you can make them ahead and freeze them. Then pull them out when you are ready to enjoy them.
To freeze your pizza muffins, just follow the instructions above to make them. Once they are cooled, store in an airtight freezer safe container and heat up when you are ready to eat them!
They are perfect for school lunches or after-school snacks too!

Pizza muffins are a fun, new way to make pizza for the family. They are easy and delicious. We always have a great time making (and eating) these in my house. I can’t wait for you to give them a try in your own home!
Literally just made these for dinner and they were awesome! Made them in the jumbo muffin tins, just cook them 3-4 minutes longer. Instead of using the amount of batter is says to put I did a little less or it would have turned out really thick and used extra cheddar cheese. It turned out super good! Definitely give it a try! The kids loved them!!
