How to Make Reindeer Chow
Making this homemade holiday Chex mix is so easy to make. Sometimes, I like to double or triple my batch and give away smaller bags for gifts. It’s such a simple and delicious gift to give to friends!
- Combine chex cereal and salted peanuts in a large bowl.
- Melt chocolate baking bars in the microwave.
- Pour melted chocolate over the chex and peanut mixture until thoroughly coated.
- Sprinkle powdered sugar into the bowl until completely coated.
Pro-Tip: If you are having trouble, you can pour the cereal into a gallon sized bag and shake it to evenly distribute the powdered sugar. - Transfer to a large serving bowl.
- Mix in the pretzels and M&Ms until everything is evenly distributed.
- Add some sprinkles on the top and enjoy!
Storage Tips
- To Store: You can leave this out at room temperature for an easy snack. Just make sure to cover it after about 24 hours so it doesn’t get stale. Otherwise, store at room temperature (or in the fridge) in an airtight container for about 3-4 days before it starts to get stale.
- To Freeze: Your chex mix can be frozen in a freezer Ziploc bag for up to 1 month. Set it on the counter to let it thaw at room temperature.
Frequently Asked Questions
Typically chex mix will stay fresh for at least a week and it shouldn’t go stale. It’s important to make sure that you have the container you are storing your Chex Mix in completely sealed each time. This can be tricky when there are multiple hands always reaching for a handful. I like to store mine in an airtight Tupperware container. I find that the Ziploc bag never gets fully sealed tight.
Giving your Chex Mix a bit of time to cool after coating it with the baking chocolate and powdered sugar isn’t a bad idea. It can help to keep the texture from becoming soggy inside. To do so, let it sit on a baking sheet for about 20 minutes to cool, after mixing together all of your ingredients.
