Here’s what you’ll need:
- metallic spray paint ( I used silver but Gold would look amazing)
- pine cones
- one package small screw eyes ( from local hardware store)
- silver floral wire
- latex gloves
I don’t have any pine trees at my house, but there’s a park just a few blocks from where I live. I was able to go over there and pick these up. Since the weather is starting to cool off there were quite a few already on the ground.
Once I had all of my supplies I went to the backyard and spray painted all of the pine cones.
**Warning, if you don’t use gloves you WILL have silver fingers 🙂
*Also one other note, when using spray paint, it works best to do a couple light coats rather than one thick coat. Pine cones have a lot of crevices which is a potential for getting drips. Especially if you apply too much paint at once.
After they were all painted, I let them dry over night.
The next day I went out to inspect the fresh new silver look and they were amazing.
I put one small screw into each pine cone.
I then grabbed my floral wire and strung them all onto it. I already have nails nailed into each end of my mantel. I wrapped each end of my garland wire around the nails to secure it in place. Once the wire was on I was able to make a small pinch in the wire where I wanted each pine cone to rest.
There are so many places you could use these painted pine cones besides in a garland, here are some other ideas:
use them as a filler in an apothecary jar
add an ornament hook and use them as ornaments
add them to a bowl or a basket for a center piece
glue them to a wreath
there are so many possibilities….!!
Happy crafting!!

I love, love, love the sprayed pinecones. Reminds me of my 50’s childhood. We always made Christmas decorations from what we had and I still do! What wonderful memories, and such beautiful things in such a simplistic way.
I’m all about the rustic look! I think pine cones, even without doing anything are pretty good at adding to the rustic vibe (although of course the silver does make them look a little more festive!) When I was younger we used to put pine cones in a bowl with some gum tree sticks and leaves (in Australia) and some untracked walnuts – it made Christmas feel more like we were in the country 🙂
Metallics bring out the pizazz in the holidays. Thanks!
