Easy Sloppy Joe Dip

This super simple Sloppy Joe Dip easily combines two of my favorite foods (a cheesy dip and a scoopable sloppy Joe dish) to create the ultimate meaty, cheesy, sweet-n-tangy, slightly saucy appetizer. In fact, I think this recipe is even more fun to serve at a Super Bowl party or game day get-together than my Sloppy Joe Casserole because this is a version you can eat with your fingers!

It is so easy to make this flavorful ground meat mixture that’s been simmered with vegetables and seasoning, then stirred and topped with cheese, and baked until melted and bubbly.

When your fans fancy something filling for their game day spread, this recipe is the perfect solution–it’s filled with protein to keep bellies full and is a scoopable snack that pairs perfectly with french baguettes slices. Serve it hot from the oven or warm in a crock pot, this dip is a delicious way to enjoy sloppy Joes with a cheesy twist, from the first down to the last hail Mary.

Sloppy Joe Dip Ingredients

  • Ground beef: I used an 80%-20% blend ground beef, also known as ground chuck. You can use any ground beef of your choice in this recipe.
  • Olive oil
  • Yellow onion
  • Red bell pepper
  • Packet Sloppy Joe Seasoning: I used McCormick brand but feel free to use your favorite.
  • Low-sodium beef broth
  • Ketchup
  • Tomato puree: Plain tomato sauce can be used in place of the tomato puree in the recipe.
  • Tomato paste
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Colby jack cheese: I highly suggest buying a block of cheese and shredding it yourself. I find that it melts much better when you shred it yourself.
  • French baguette

Substitutions and Additions

  • More Meat Options: You can substitute ground turkey, ground sirloin, ground round, or ground pork for the ground beef in this recipe.
  • Change The Cheese: Feel free to use shredded cheddar cheese, sharp cheddar, or pepper jack cheese instead of the colby jack cheese for your dip.
  • Serve With Scoopables: In addition to French baguette slices, bagel chips, tortilla chips, Tostitos Scoops, or even Fritos corn chips are great for scooping and dipping. You can also serve this with some celery sticks or bell pepper slices.

How to Make Sloppy Joe Dip

This Sloppy Joe Dip has the perfect amount of sweet and savory, and just enough cheesiness to make a crowd-pleasing Super Bowl snack or game day appetizer. It is so easy to make this seasoned meat mixture and simmer it with vegetables, stir in some cheese and top it with more, then bake it into the best bite of sloppy Joe that you serve without a bun.

  1. Add olive oil and ground beef to a skillet and cook until browned and cooked through.
  2. Transfer the cooked beef to a paper towel lined plate and drain any excess fat from the skillet, leaving 1 tablespoon of fat in the pan to saute the vegetables.
Pro-Tip: If you are using a fattier meat, make sure that you drain off the majority of the excess fat after the meat has cooked through; if you choose a leaner meat then you will not have as much fat left in the pan after cooking it.
  3. Add the onions and pepper to the skillet that cooked the meat and saute for 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.
Pro-Tip: If no fat is left in the skillet after cooking the meat, then you may want to add an additional 1 tablespoon olive oil to the pan once you remove your cooked meat and begin to cook the onions and peppers.
  4. Add the sloppy joe seasoning, beef broth, ketchup, tomato puree, tomato paste, worcestershire sauce, salt and black pepper to the vegetables and stir to combine.
  5. Add the cooked ground beef back to the skillet and then turn off the heat.
  6. Stir 1 cup of the cheese into the sloppy joe mixture, transfer it to the casserole dish, and top with the remaining cheese.
  7. Bake at 375 degrees Farenheit for 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the dip is bubbly and hot.
  8. Allow the sloppy joe dip to rest for 5 minutes before serving with the french baguette slices. Enjoy!

How to Store Sloppy Joe Dip

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ cup yellow onion small diced
  • ½ cup red bell pepper small diced
  • 1.31 oz packet Sloppy Joe Seasoning (I used McCormick brand)
  • ½ cup low-sodium beef broth
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • cup tomato puree
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tsp worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 2 cups shredded colby jack cheese
  • 1 fresh french baguette sliced into ¼” pieces

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375* F. You will need an 8×8 inch., oven safe, casserole dish.
  • In a medium skillet, on medium-high heat, add the olive oil and ground beef. Cook the meat for 5 minutes, or until browned and cooked through. Transfer the cooked ground beef to a paper towel lined plate and drain any excess fat from the skillet. Make sure to leave 1 tablespoon of fat in the pan to saute the vegetables in.
  • To the same skillet that you cooked the ground beef in, after the excess fat has been drained off, add the chopped onions and red bell pepper. Saute for 5 minutes or until the vegetables are tender.
  • To the vegetables add the packet of sloppy joe seasoning, beef broth, ketchup, tomato puree, tomato paste, worcestershire sauce, salt and black pepper. Stir to combine. Add the cooked ground beef back to the skillet and simmer the mixture on medium heat for 5 minutes. Turn off the heat to the skillet.
  • Stir in 1 cup of the shredded colby jack cheese. Transfer the sloppy joe dip mixture to the 8×8 casserole dish. Top the mixture with the remaining 1 cup shredded colby jack cheese.
  • Bake for 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the dip is bubbly and hot.
