Tequila Sunrise Freezer Pops

Our Tequila Sunrise Boozy Popsicles recipe takes only 5 minutes to make using 3 types of juice, tequila, plus grenadine and lime slices for garnishing.

Full of sweet fruity flavor with a strong tequila taste, these freezer pops are prepared in dixie cups (no popsicle molds or ice pop bags needed) and filled with orange, pineapple, and lime juice, alcohol, grenadine, and a lime slice; when you’re ready to indulge, just peel off the paper and enjoy!

You don’t need any special skills to create the “sunrise” effect, but in order to achieve this layered look, you must pour the grenadine into the dixie cups after you add the juice mixture.

I love to create frozen treats based on their cocktail counterparts; tequila sunrise popsicles are perfect to serve poolside and fitting for warm weather festivities, but because they contain alcohol, they’re for adults only.

How to Make Tequila Sunrise Boozy Pops

  1. Make The Mixture: Mix together the orange juice, pineapple juice, lime juice, and tequila.
  2. Fill And Freeze: Pour mixture into the bottom of dixie cups and then add the grenadine into the mixture. Freeze for about 1 hour.
Pro Tip: Be sure to pour the grenadine into the center, somewhat slowly. It will sink to the bottom.
  3. Prepare The Popsicles: Cut lime slices small enough to fit inside the dixie cups and then make a slit in the center of each lime. Insert a popsicle stick through the lime and insert it inside each drink.
Pro Tip: The tip of the popsicle stick should be about near the bottom but not fully touching. The lime should rest just on the surface of the mixture, touching but not submerged.
  4. Freeze: Freeze for another 5 hours or overnight.
  5. Serve: Remove the paper and enjoy!

Tips For Making The Best Tequila Sunrise Boozy Pops

  • Place cups on a baking sheet for transportation purposes. This is much easier than transporting one or two at a time to the freezer.
  • Freeze the drinks slightly before adding the lime so that the surface is somewhat frosty. Without this, the limes tend to collect more frost over the surface of the lime while freezing.
  • Be sure not to swish the popsicle stick inside the drink too much when adding the lime slice. This helps prevent the grenadine from mixing too much.
  • These popsicles will melt quicker than usual when left at room temperature or higher due to the alcohol. Be sure to keep popsicles over ice when enjoying.
  • This recipe can easily be doubled to feed a crowd.
  • Keep the popsicles inside the dixie cup when they are on ice. This will help contain any juices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of tequila should I use for this recipe?

I used a mid-grade silver tequila for this recipe because it mixed well with the juices. You can use a gold tequila also but I do suggest using one that you would drink in a standard cocktail. You do not need to use the expensive top shelf varieties but I would stay away from the really low end ones.

How do I create the layered look for my boozy ice pops?

For the layered look, the grenadine is heavier in density than the tequila and fruit juices, so it naturally sinks to the bottom of the mixture. When you peel the paper off the frozen pops, you’ll see the colorful ombre effect that creates the tropical look and feel.

Total Time 6 hours 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup orange juice
  • cup pineapple juice
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • ½ cup silver tequila
  • Grenadine for garnishing you will use about 4-½ teaspoons
  • Lime slices for garnishing

Instructions

  • Add orange juice, pineapple juice, lime juice, and tequila in a large picture. Mix until fully blended.
  • Pour mixture into the bottom of dixie cups, leaving about ½ inch from the top.
  • Pour ½ teaspoon of grenadine into the mixture. Be sure to pour into the center, somewhat slowly. It will sink to the bottom.
  • Place cups inside the freezer to freeze for about 1 hour.
  • After 1 hour, cut 9 lime slices just small enough to fit inside the dixie cups. You may need several limes for this. Use an extra dixie cup to measure.
  • Using a shark knife, cut a slit in the center of each lime, about ½ – 1 inch long.
  • Remove the drinks from the freezer. Insert a popsicle stick through the lime and insert it inside the drink. The tip of the popsicle stick should be about near the bottom but not fully touching. The lime should rest just on the surface of the mixture, touching but not submerged. Adjust the lime accordingly. Repeat for each drink.
  • Place the drinks back inside the freezer and chill for another 5 hours or overnight.
  • When done, rip the dixie cup paper from around the edges, or pull the popsicle out by pulling up on the popsicle stick. Enjoy!
