Texas Trash Dip (Warm Bean Dip)

Our Texas Trash Dip recipe is so much better than the typical boring bean dip because it is packed with flavorful ingredients plus an extra kick from spicy green chiles.

It takes under 10 minutes to prepare this Texas bean dip, simply by mixing 6 ingredients together, pouring it into a casserole dish, and baking it until the Mexican cheese blend on top is brown and bubbly.

Although McCormick may have made the original Texas dip recipe using a packet of their popular taco seasoning, I prefer to make this my own by adding more chiles to the mix and making sure there’s tons of melted cheese on top. 

The perfect size for feeding a crowd because it’s baked in a large pan, this delicious dip is the ultimate appetizer for fiestas, game days, or Super Bowl parties (and it’s hearty enough to fill your hungry guests without worry of running out).

  • Grab Your Garnish: Garnish your dip with some chopped parsley, cilantro, chopped or sliced jalapeños, olives, tomatoes, or avocado.
  • Cut The Calories: Reduce the fat and calories of your dip by using low fat or no fat sour cream and/or cream cheese if desired (although I highly recommend using the full fat versions).
  • Serving Suggestions: Almost any sturdy cracker or chip pairs perfectly with this Mexican dip recipe. A few of my faves are toasted baguette slices, tortilla chips, Fritos, pita chips, and pretzel chips.

How to Make Texas Trash Dip

  1. Make The Mixture: Heat the cream cheese until soft and almost melted. Mix in sour cream, refried beans, green chiles, taco seasoning and half of the cheese. Stir until melted, pour into the casserole dish, and top with cheese.
  2. Bake: Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20-25 minutes until the cheese is melted.
  3. Serve: Garnish and serve with corn chips. Enjoy!

Tips For the Best Texas Trash Dip

  • This dip is best served warm, fresh from the oven. However, it can be assembled a day ahead of time and baked just before serving.
  • The cheese will become a bit more stiff as it cools, so sturdy tortilla chips are best for dipping.

Depending on the brand of refried beans, this dip can be vegetarian. Be careful when buying premade canned refried beans and double check that your refried beans are certified vegetarian. Refried beans often contain lard which is not vegetarian-friendly.

I do not recommend freezing this dip. When frozen and thawed, the texture will not be the same.

Can I make Texas trash dip in a slow cooker?

Yes, you can make this dip in a slow cooker. Simply mix all of the ingredients together and instead of baking it in the oven, cook it in a crockpot on high for 2 hours. When you are ready to serve, top with your favorite garnishes.

Ingredients
  

  • 8 ounce package cream cheese cubed
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 16 ounce can refried beans
  • 4.5 ounce can chopped green chiles
  • 1 package taco seasoning mix 24 grams
  • 4 cups shredded Tex-Mex cheese blend divided

Garnishes:

  • chopped parsley/cilantro
  • jalapeños chopped or sliced
  • olives
  • tomatoes

Instructions
 

  • Lightly spray a 9×13 dish and preheat oven to 350F.
  • Heat up a large pan and cubed cream cheese over medium heat until soft and almost fully melted.
  • Add in sour cream, refried beans, chopped green chiles, taco seasoning and half of the Tex Mex cheese blend. Heat and stir until melted, then pour into prepared casserole dish and top with remaining cheese.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until the cheese is melted.
  • Serve with any garnishes desired and corn chips.
