Ingredients / Shopping List

  • Granny Smith apples -sliced and peeled
  • Brown sugar
  • Butter
  • Cinnamon
  • Canned cinnamon buns
  • Caramel Sauce

Substitutions and Additions

  • APPLES: Using Granny Smith apples adds a bit of tartness that calms down the sweetness. You can use another type of apple if you prefer. Some like it sweeter, in which case you could use Gala or Honeycrisp apples instead.
  • NUTS: A super common and easy addition to this recipe is nuts. Feel free to add your favorite type of nuts to this. I like to add pecans or walnuts. You can add them in the mix, or simply sprinkle them on the final product.
  • RAISINS: Another common addition to this recipe is raisins. If you’re a raisin fan, they are delicious in these cinnamon rolls.

Storage Tips

  • To Store: The cinnamon buns are best in fresh, but you can store them in an airtight container on the counter for two days.
  • To Freeze: I don’t recommend freezing this recipe after it’s been baked. It doesn’t thaw quite right. This is best served fresh or reheated from the fridge.
  • To Reheat: When you want to eat them, you can reheat them in the microwave for 30 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the apples stick to the bottom of the pan?

As long as you’re spraying the pan with nonstick spray, it should not stick.

Do I have to buy a certain kind of cinnamon bun?

No, you can make these with your favorite brand and style of cinnamon rolls.

Can I make this with a can of apple pie filling?

Yes, you can use the premade pie filling, but it will end up with a slightly different texture. If you choose to go this route, you could use any flavor of pie filling in place of the apple pie filling as well.

Can I make apple pie cinnamon rolls ahead of time?

You could definitely prepare this recipe the night before you plan to bake. Then you’ll just need to pop it in the oven when you wake up in the morning!
