French Toast in a Mug Recipe
Making meals in a mug just maybe my newest obsession and this French Toast Mug is where it all began! My son, Joey, and I saw a video on the Food Network on how to make 3 quick and easy meals in a mug and we were hooked.
We could hardly wait to try to make our French Toast Mug. Let’s just say this recipe speaks to me – First of all, it’s one dish (mug) to clean up. Second, it’s done in 2 easy steps. When all is said and done, I get a breakfast my kids are begging for more of rather than leaving leftovers.
This is also great for making French Toast for 2…. use two mugs! However, sometimes you may just have a french toast craving, but no one else is on board with that (go figure).
In that case, this single-serving French Toast Mug is the perfect solution! If you love French Toast, then you will go CRAZY for this quick French Toast recipe in a mug!
We adjusted the Food Network’s recipe slightly and I totally recommend using challah bread if you can – the sweetness of the bread just enhances the deliciousness!!

These are both total keepers!
I am telling you, this will be your new favorite weekend recipe! The egg bread mixture, with the hint of cinnamon, all warmed up and ooey gooey, will have your kids begging for it! It is such an easy french toast recipe. Yet, without the hassle of making french toast!
Ingredients
- 1 piece buttered bread (we used challah and I would totally recommend if you have it.)
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons syrup
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- a pinch of salt
- 1 tablespoon of chocolate chips (we used mini chocolate chips which melted really nicely)
- Powdered sugar (optional)
- Cinnamon sugar (optional)
Substitutions, Toppings or Add-Ins
Feel free to shake things up a little and get creative with your french toast in a mug! We love some of these great toppings or add-ins:
BREAD: Like I mentioned above, we used challah, also known as egg bread. If you cannot find challah, brioche is a great substitution.
Mix-Ins: The mini chocolate chips are our favorite, but the sky is the limit to add in! We love cinnamon chips, peanut butter, M&M’s, raspberries, strawberries, bananas, blueberries.
Toppings: Top it off with some whipped cream and sprinkles for a special occasion, or just to be fun!
How to make French Toast in a Mug
Like we said, this is the easiest french toast recipe ever! It literally takes less than five minutes.
- Mix together the egg, milk, syrup, cinnamon, and salt into a microwaveable mug.
- Cut off the crust of the bread and cube.
- Submerge the bread within the egg mixture of the mug.
- Stir in the chocolate chips.
- Sprinkle the optional cinnamon sugar on top.
- Microwave for a total of 2 minutes stopping every 30 seconds (count to ten and start again – this is so it doesn’t explode in your microwave.)
- Let cool for about 1-2 minutes.

I tried this recipe along with other mug recipes, but I keep on having this issue with the meal being really moist, and not really bread-y? Any advice?
Hi Sammy – the bottom of the mug is for sure moister than the top (although the top for me is not). You can try giving it a stir when you stop the microwave to let it rest?
Can’t wait to try it…I love French toast
i loved the french toast, although i think there should be some brown sugar in it. i also liked it with rolos lol
Love this!! Ill be making it a lot from now on!!
I have been treated this with love .
THIS IS AWESOME!
I don’t know about this recipe. I tried it and the first few bites tasted delicious but then I got to the middle and it still wasn’t cooked all the way. So I put it in for an extra 2 minutes but it still never cooked. Disappointed that it didn’t meet my expectations. ๐
Can you cook it in a toaster oven/conventional oven?
I don’t think it would work too well that way!
Yes, you can! It’s called Bread Pudding! Same exact ingredients, just bake it in an oven-proof vessel (mug, single casserole dish, etc…). The time would depend upon which dish you use. If you spread it out in a single casserole, maybe bake it 10 min. A deep oven-proof mug would probably need 15 minutes. Experiment! You can add all kinds of fruit pieces, nuts, lots of things. Look up recipes for Bread Pudding to get ideas. Of course, they will be scaled for a large dish but use Jennifer’s measurements on this site as a guideline for an individual serving.
Love this recipe!! I have made it several times now and the only change I make is to use raisins instead of chocolate chips. I sometimes make this as a dessert rather than a breakfast and then I soak the raisins in a little bit of rum prior to adding to the mug (and yes, I throw in the extra rum that the raisins didn’t soak up! lol). Add a bit of real whipped cream when done and you have a fabulous end to your dinner – just delicious!!!! Thanks so much for this great recipe!!
Oooh, that WOULD be a great idea….like bread pudding! Throw some strawberries on top would be fabulous, too!
Can I sub honey for the syrup? Im overseas and we dont have maple syrup here. I made this recipe omitting the syrup and it turned out good but was missing that sweetness that syrup brings.
Hi Natalya – I haven’t tried that, but it sure is worth trying – I may suggest adding a little bit more cinnamon sugar also. I also found this substitute for maple syrup…. maybe give it a try!!!
