I absolutely love Oreo cookies, and I love baking with them. Whether it’s making these incredible no bake Oreo bars, peanut butter Oreo cookie bars, or marshmallow Oreo brownies – I don’t think you can go wrong with an Oreo dessert.

But I had never made homemade Oreos before until now. So I was so excited to make these and share them with you.

Ingredients You Need to Make Homemade Oreos

To make these cookies – there’s only a few ingredients that you need:

  • A box of Devils food cake cake mix
  • vegetable or canola oil
  • eggs
  • butter
  • cream cheese
  • powdered sugar
  • a little milk or cream

The recipe will make about 24 individual cookies, and therefore about 12 sandwiches after they’re made into the Oreos. So if you need more cookies – you can easily double the recipe too.

How to Make Homemade Oreo CookiesHow to make a cream cheese filling

Making these cookies couldn’t be easier. They’re extra soft, fudgy and completely delicious with the cream cheese filling.

To make the cookies – mix together the Devil’s food cake, oil and 2 eggs. You can use other varieties of chocolate cake too – but I preferred the flavor of Pillsbury Devil’s food cake the best.

Then form the dough into balls, place on a lined cookie sheet and flatten down the middle so there’s a little indent in the middle. I found the cookies can rise too much otherwise, so flattening them down was necessary. Then pop them in the oven to bake.

How to make homemade Oreos

The filling is made by beating together butter and a little cream cheese until smooth. Then mixing in powdered sugar along with the cream or milk.

Fudgy, soft Oreo cookies made with cake mix.

You could sub the butter for margarine or shortening if that’s all you have on hand. And if you don’t like cream cheese frosting – use 100% butter instead of butter and cream cheese.

The combo of creamy frosting with the soft, fudgy chocolate cookies is seriously to die for. And whether you’re an Oreo lover or not – these you definitely need to try these easy homemade Oreo cookies.

Can you freeze those? I was wanting to send them to a friend but I (stupidly) made them on a Saturday so they canโ€™t even go out until Monday and then itโ€™s another 3 days for it to get there.

  3. I made whoopie pies for our yard sale last year. Did I mention it was my first try? So dry, I wasnโ€™t going to make them again. My husband loved them, said I need to make them again. This recipe looks a bit better. I may try them. (Iโ€™ll let you know.)
