Ingredients / Shopping List

  • Lime: You can use fresh lime juice or from concentrate for this recipe.
  • Lemon: I like using both lemon and lime when doing this, because it adds an interesting depth of flavor. However, if you don’t have one or the other just substitute the one you do have. It will still be delicious.
  • Jell-O – I used Raspberry powdered gelatin, Lime powdered gelatin, Lemon powdered gelatin, Orange powdered gelatin and Blueberry powdered gelatin. Feel free to change up the flavors or try this Jolly Rancher flavored Jell-o!
  • Green grapes: You could also try this with red grapes! I’m sure they will be tasty as well.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Powdered gelatin: If you want to try other flavors of gelatin, feel free. You could try watermelon, green apple, strawberry, cherry, etc. The flavors chosen for this recipe are similar to the original Sour Patch flavors.
  • Fruit: Try coating your other favorite fruits, like cotton candy grapes, bite-sized strawberries, pineapple chunks, watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, kiwi, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, or mandarin oranges.
  • Coating Method: While I prefer to use toothpicks to coat my grapes because it is less messy, feel free to use your fingers and roll the grapes in the gelatin powder. This may be quicker, but your fingers will be super sticky! You can also try using a plastic Ziploc storage bag to shake the grapes in each color. Another quick method, but the grapes may not be coated evenly.
  • Shallow bowls or cups
  • Toothpicks

How to Make Sour Patch Grapes Recipe

Pucker up and get your candy fix! Making sour patch grapes is as easy as tossing grapes in tart juice and different flavors of gelatin mix.

  1. Whisk together the lime and lemon juice. Add powdered gelatin to separate bowls.
  2. Stick a toothpick into the top of each grape. Dunk each grape into the liquid mixture and then roll it in the gelatin powder.
Pro:Tip: You can also coat your grapes by rolling them aound in the Jell-o with your fingers (but your fingers may get a little sticky. You can also shake them up in a ziplock bag, but I found they don’t get as nicely coated!)
  3. Continue to dunk and roll each grape, alternating between flavors.
  4. Refrigerate coated grapes, remove the toothpicks, and enjoy!
PRO-TIP: You can also freeze the grapes for 2-3 hours!

Tips From Our Recipe Developer

  • Make sure your grapes are well washed and dried before doing this recipe.
  • The powdered gelatin starts to get wet after repeated dipping, this can make it difficult to fully coat the grapes. If that would bother you, pour less of it into the bowls at the beginning, then switch it out with newer powdered gelatin as it gets wet.
  • If you are experiencing clumps of gelatin mixture when dipping, spoon the powder onto the grapes until they are completely covered.
  • I used a large plate to set the candy grapes onto after being dipped. This gives your grapes enough space to properly chill in the refrigerator. You could also use a baking sheet or serving tray.

Storage Tips

  • To Store: Store in a sealed container, in the fridge, for 1-2 weeks.
  • To Freeze: Freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. (They are delicious straight out of the freezer!

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I store these Sour Patch Grapes?

You can store these sour patch grapes freely in the refrigerator. However, the grapes will start to go bad in about 1-2 weeks, so be sure to eat them before then.

Are Candied grapes healthy?

Though they are not nearly as healthy as raw grapes, sour patch grapes can still be enjoyed safely in moderation.
However, this recipe is not meant to replace the fruits and vegetables in your diet.
When compared to other treats such as donuts, cakes, cookies, chips, ice cream, and more, these candy grapes may be a healthier choice. Grapes are overall good for you and are a good source of vitamins and minerals.

Why are my sour patch grapes sticky?

Grapes become sticky if they are too wet when you put them in the gelatin powder. You don’t want them dripping wet. You want them just wet enough that the powder will stick.

Can I freeze my grapes before coating them?

If you freeze your grapes before coating them, they will have a bit more crunch when eating. I love this idea! You can easily rinse and coat the grapes, then put into freezer bags or portion containers and pop into the freezer for an hour. They can then be stored in the freezer for up to one month to be eaten when convenient.

Why are my sour patch grapes not fully coated with the jello?

It’s pretty normal to have some of the grapes take on the white spots (remember, these are professional photographs, we used the best-looking grapes!) Make sure the grape is completely coated in the lemon/lime juice and then immediately dunk it in the jello. Make sure the juice doesn’t dry before coating and fully coat the grape in the Jell-O.

This worked well for my little one who can’t have certain dyes. We got dye free jello and had lots of fun making them together. I’m not a huge citrus fan, but the lime jello ones were by far the best!
