Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and prepare two 7 or 6 inch round cake pans with non-stick cooking spray.
Mix together the flour and baking soda. Blend well and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, blend together all other cake ingredients (except for milk bones) using an electric hand or stand mixer.
Fold in the dry ingredients and blend again until fully incorporated.
Pour out the cake mix into the bake pans, dividing evenly.
Bake for 23-25 minutes or until the tops of the cake are golden brown.
When done, allow the cakes to cool for about 2 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack. Allow the cakes to cool there until they reach room temperature.
Once at room temperature, begin to prepare your frosting. Add all frosting ingredients to a small mixing bowl and blend well using a fork. Mix until the frosting is thick, clump free, and falls off the fork very slowly.
Using a frosting knife or butter knife, frost the top of one of the cakes, covering it completely. You should use half of the frosting.
Place the second cake round on the frosting, lining up perfectly with the bottom cake. Frost the top of the cake with the remaining frosting.
Top with crushed milk bones for garnishing (optional) and serve to your favorite birthday fur baby.

Tips:
Each dog can react differently to any type of new treat that hits its belly. This is important to note when serving your pup something new for the first time. Serve your pup one treat within 24 hours to see how their belly responds before giving them multiple.
Be sure to use whole wheat flour in this recipe, not all-purpose.
The frosting consistency in this recipe should be similar to actual frosting.
Before frosting the cake, place the first cake round on a cake stand if you plan on using one. If not, you can use a plate.
The frosting will have a light brown color to it.
The inside of this cake is very moist from the applesauce.
Add birthday candles and whipped topping for added celebration.
